Racing to Play

The Home Depot Teams with JGR and KaBOOM!

Race to PlayRacing to Play is back in 2007 for its third year, and we’re building 10 more racing-themed playgrounds to coincide with the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series season. Racing to Play is a partnership between The Home Depot, Joe Gibbs Racing and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization whose vision is to create a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.

Over the past two years, Racing to Play has built 20 racing-themed KaBOOM! playgrounds that have impacted the lives of more than 11,000 children across the country. The playgrounds are possible only with the help of dedicated community volunteers - many of whom are The Home Depot associates.

In 2005 and 2006, the program built playgrounds in the following race markets: Jackson, Mich., Daytona, Fla., Joliet, Ill., Indianapolis, Fontana, Calif., Richmond, Va., Talladega, Ala., Kansas City, Kan., Atlanta, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Ft. Worth, Texas, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, N.C., San Anselmo, Calif., Loudon, N.H., Watkins Glen, N.Y., Dover, Del., Greensboro, N.C., and Miami.

Racing to Play playgrounds are built in coordination with local community partners that provide assistance to children in need. With this program, we want to make a lasting, positive impression in the lives of at-risk children; bring the excitement of NASCAR racing to kids who are unable to experience it first-hand; and most importantly, provide these kids with a safe and fun playground. We believe every child has the right to play.

Racing to Play kicks off its third year on March 15 in Atlanta prior to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. I’ll be there along with my teammates from Joe Gibbs Racing to make sure the playground gets built on time – we only have six short hours to transform a flat piece of land into a new, action-packed playground.

In addition to Atlanta, Racing to Play will be building new places to play in: Dallas (Apr. 12); Charlotte, N.C. (May 17); Detroit (June 14); Chicago (July 12); Indianapolis (July 26); Long Pond, Penn. (Aug. 2); Fontana, Calif. (Aug. 30), Dover, Del. (Sept. 20); and Phoenix (Nov. 8).

Be sure to follow the progress of Racing to Play here throughout the season. We’ll share pictures and updates from each of the playground builds.

Through Racing to Play – we’re not just building playgrounds – we’re building dreams.

Let’s Play,

Tony Stewart
